Is It My Fault If I Couldn’t Read the Contract I Signed?
Some consumers have transformed making excuses to a fine art. When asked to explain the circumstances of a misleading deal or dubious transaction, they invariably shift the focus to someone else.
In reality, they probably made a mistake, failed to read the fine print or acted impulsively. And that’s OK. We all do those things, at one time or another. But some consumers will never admit it. Instead, they make excuses.
They’ll claim the merchant is lying or insist a clerk made a promise he refuses to keep. Now a relatively new excuse is emerging. I’ve heard it several times from several consumers, just in a matter of weeks. It struck me as so odd that I want to share it with you–and warn you about using it. It’s the “I left my eye glasses at home” defense.
The consumers who use it claim they couldn’t read the contracts or documents they signed. Therefore, they argue, they shouldn’t have to live up to the terms of the agreements. They claim they’re entitled to full refunds, cancellation of contracts and other special privileges because they were at a disadvantage when they entered into the questionable deal.
I don’t see it that way. There may be times when a salesperson pressures a consumer to sign on the spot, without even giving the person time to go home to get his glasses. However, most consumers sign their names voluntarily. They have the option to wait if the print is too small to see.
It’s foolish to sign anything unless you read it. If you can’t see what you’re signing, stop writing. Go home and get your glasses. Then read it, before you agree to anything.
Actual Consumer Excuses

I lost my glasses and couldn’t read my mail. My car is broke down and the nearest mailbox is 10 miles away. That person is deceased. A week later, at the same phone number, “That person is not home right now.” I didn’t know I had to actually pay that bill. I was robbed of my mail at the post office while trying to mail your check. When I got home I couldn’t find my check book. As soon as I find my check book I will send your check.
