Some retailers are already trying to entice consumers to spend their tax rebates.
- Supervalu, parent company of Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shop ‘n Save and other grocery chains, will add 10 percent to rebates cashed in its stores through July 31.
- Sears will give consumers an extra 10 percent if they use the entire rebate to purchase a gift card for use at Sears, Kmart or Lands’ End stores. The offer runs from May 14 to July 19.
- Kroger grocery stores will add $30 to the value of rebate checks if consumers use them to buy Kroger gift cards.
- Staples is offering small-business owners $50 off purchases of $500 or more and $150 off furniture costing at least $1,000 for a limited time. Through June 30, purchases of more than $499 with a Staples credit card will be payment and interest free for six months.
- Home Depot is offering discounts through July on the purchase of compact fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star appliances, hoping consumers will turn the rebates into sources of long-term energy savings.
Taxpayers began getting those highly promoted tax rebates April 28, earlier than previously announced.
